Traditional fashion meets Global thrift store

These "huipls," the traditional "shirts" (if you can call them that) are beautiful! They are actually quite expensive, as they each require much thread and months of work! Though most Mayan women and girls throughout Guatemala still wear them, fashion is quickly shifting toward modern trends not only because of the look, but because of economics. I went to the "Paca" here on Saturday and Sunday to find a belt, and some warm clothing for the coming months (I've discovered that it gets much cooler here than I expected). The Paca is a massive international thrift market. It's bizarre to be shopping in Guatemala and find an H&M shirt that was made in Cambodia, sold in the U.S. (possibly several times) and now on a rack in Antigua for 20Q (roughly $3 USD). Here are some shots of the contrast. (Note the baby sleeping happily as the mother works... most Mayan women here have several children to care for as they work).
